Herdwick Sheep

The breed that Beatrix Potter completely fell in love with and it’s not hard to see why. A truly beautiful breed, with smiley teddy bear faces, they are such an underappreciated breed, producing meat (hoggets) and wool.

The lambs are born black, occasionally with white flecks, and their wool slowly turns from brown to grey as they age. Their coarse wool is used in to make wool mattresses predominantly in Cumbria from where they originate. I personally use their wool to make peg loom rugs to keep the slugs off the plants in the garden.

We started our flock in 2020 with our original 3 and now have 20, all bred by ourselves. Not only do they make brilliant pets, as are naturally very inquisitive and very friendly, but they are a conservation grazer. That means they don’t just graze on the grass but the surrounding landscape; ours absolutely love a hedge!

Another interesting point about the Herdwick is that they are a self shearing breed. Come shearing time you’ll likely find that there actually isn’t that much to take off.

It is a very hardy breed, accustomed to wet, windy and cold weather conditions, and you’ll also find that they rarely get any foot problems as with commercial sheep.

A key point to bear in mind in keeping the Herdwick is that they need sturdy fencing.
